Ornithologue de renommée internationale, plusieurs fois membre des comités de direction des plus grandes associations d’ornithologie anglaises (Royal Society for the Protection of Brids, British Ornithologists’ Union, British Trust for Ornithology), James Ferguson-Lees est aussi l’auteur de nombreux guides d’identification des oiseaux.
